Luis Valenciano

Psychiatrist – Spain

Head of the Training and Education Committee ISTFP

Navigating the depths of the human mind is a task that requires not only courage but also skill, knowledge and expert guidance. I am Dr. Luis Valenciano, and I am pleased to invite you to enter the most advanced level of Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) through our specialized program.

The beginning of the year brings us a Master Class where we will review the basics of PFT and its most advanced techniques. It is a preamble to prepare you for what will come next, an intensive focus on clinical supervisions.

During the program, you will have the opportunity to present your clinical cases in a rotational learning model. These supervision sessions are the core of the program, offering each therapist direct feedback and guidance from our renowned faculty.

Join us on this deep and enriching immersion into PFT, where together we will face challenges and refine our clinical practice to provide the best possible care for our patients.

“A TFP session encourages the patient to reproduce his usual problems and conflicts, those that when they occur in his traditional environment cause him to have problem-laden relationships with others, but now in a safe environment (the session) and in reference to an other, the therapist. That is to say, that it happens with us, in the psychotherapy session, what happens in his daily life, but with the possibility of thinking about it, with the possibility that the therapist helps him to think about what he is doing without knowing”.

(Steiner et al., 2023).

Undoubtedly a complex, laborious task. A task that should not be undertaken alone. Here, CLINICAL SUPERVISION is key.

What is Clinical Supervision?

CLINICAL SUPERVISION is a mainstay of PFT training. In them, novice therapists benefit from the wisdom and experience of more experienced therapists, who guide them in reflecting on their clinical cases, the therapeutic encounter, and the microprocess. This orientation seeks to clarify the elements of the therapeutic interaction, providing clear direction for future encounters and interventions.

Enroll and strengthen your clinical practice through comprehensive, hands-on training with experts in the field.

What you will learn in this program

You will refine your clinical practice through detailed, expert analysis using videos or transcripts of actual sessions in the context of Transference Focused Psychotherapy.

It will not follow a traditional lecture-based class schedule. Instead, the essence of the program lies in rotating clinical supervisions with TFP-accredited faculty-supervisors.

Includes free access to the 2024 masterclasses.

Who will you learn with?

You will learn with the best Spanish-speaking certified TFP therapists and members of the ISTFP.

General summary

Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a revolutionary therapeutic technique, primarily designed to address complex personality disorders, such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Inspired by Otto Kernberg’s Structural Theory, this comprehensive training provides professionals with an in-depth understanding of mental apparatus models and the structural organization of borderline pathology. Throughout the seven modules of this program, students will be equipped with key skills, from mastering TFP strategies and tactics, to managing specific clinical challenges and navigating advanced phases of treatment. The training emphasizes the importance of interpretation, countertransference, and transference analysis in the therapeutic process, preparing therapists to establish more effective therapeutic relationships and meet the challenges inherent in treating patients with BPD. As you progress through this program, you will discover the transformative power of TFP and how this technique can take psychotherapy to new depths, providing clearer pathways to healing and integration for your patients.

Program Structure

Group Formation:

Students will be divided into three groups. Each group will be assigned to one of the program supervisors.

Preparation of Clinical Cases:

Students will be required to prepare a clinical case to be presented and supervised by the supervisor assigned to their group. The importance of detailed preparation is emphasized, including videos or transcripts of actual sessions for thorough analysis.

Rotational Clinical Supervisions:

After a defined period, the groups will rotate to have the opportunity to be supervised by each of the three professors. This rotation ensures that students benefit from the experience and perspective of each expert.

In-Depth Analysis:

During the supervisions, the clinical cases presented will be analyzed in detail. The therapeutic approaches employed will be discussed, areas for improvement will be identified and specific insights and recommendations will be provided.

The use of videos or transcripts will allow a step-by-step analysis of the sessions, highlighting patient-therapist dynamics, transferential and countertransferential reactions, and other essential aspects of PFT.

Evaluation and Feedback:

After each supervision, constructive feedback will be offered to the therapist, with the objective of enhancing their professional growth and improving their clinical practice.
