Psychotherapy in the borderline adolescent

Pepa Gonzalez

Psychologist – Spain

Director TFP Hispanoamerica Institute

More and more adolescents are coming to us for consultation.
Younger and younger.
More and more serious.
Sometimes with behaviors that, only 10 years ago, would have seemed unbelievable.
Very difficult situations.

La Casa de la Psicoterapia is an institute dedicated to helping therapists in the Spanish-speaking world in their difficulties.

And this is one of the most urgent and important.

Who is the target audience?

This Masterclass is designed for anyone interested in better understanding narcissism and learning practical strategies to address it in daily and professional life.

What you will learn in this Masterclass

Parents sometimes doubt whether what is happening to their adolescent son/daughter is normal or not. If it is normal adolescence or if it is already something pathological that deserves a consultation.

Other times it is obvious to them that it is not normal adolescence.

On the other hand, the DSM says that no one can be diagnosed with Personality Disorder until the age of 18.

But if they debut at age 12 with promiscuous and risky behaviors, what do we do? Wait until age 18? Frankly, that doesn’t seem like an option.

All our colleagues know how to interview.

But they certainly want to enrich their regular interview with questions and attitudes of their older teachers.

This is how we will develop the structural interview for adolescents and the PAI, a series of questions aimed at intensifying and bringing closer the relationship between an adolescent and a therapist whom they have just met.

We know that the interview is not only to obtain information and to diagnose, but also to stimulate the adolescent to engage in a relationship with his/her therapist and to awaken his/her curiosity towards him/herself.

The Video

This is a unique event.

Let’s watch a video of Paulina Kernbergthe true world pioneer in the field of PT in children and adolescents. She is also Lina and Pepa’s teacher. They have seen many of Paulina’s videos.

Let’s see how Paulina illustrates in the video how she interviews a teenager, how she relates to him or her, how she applies the PAI, what this magical style she had is like.

Unfortunately Paulina is not with us since 2006 but we have her spirit, her video and her disciples.

Together, hand in hand, they will wonder about what was going on in Paulina’s mind as she interviewed the young man, why she made that intervention and not another, why she made her clinical decisions live.
